This studentship is a collaboration between the University of York and Sense about Science (SaS), an independent charity that promotes the public interest in sound science and ensures evidence is recognised in public life and policymaking. SaS works with researchers to equip the public, policymakers and media with good questions and insights into evidence, particularly on difficult issues. This studentship offers opportunities to work on several flagship initiatives run by SaS, including their Voice of Young Science programme, Evidence Week and the John Maddox Prize. Each initiative focuses on a different aspect of research culture, how it affects quality, and how different stakeholders can take responsibility for change. The student will act as an intern within SaS to gain lasting and valuable skills in project coordination and facilitation, communication for a public audience, and an understanding of the systemic issues in research culture that lead to poor-quality research and what can be done about them. The successful applicant will be expected to be in office in London up to four days a week and as such will need to organise their own accommodation and be expected to present their findings orally at a research day in York in September 2025.
