Sheffield, UK

Sarah Hargreaves, School of Allied Health, University of Sheffield

Do you have an interest and passion for improving the experiences of people living with a rare cancer? Join the team at the Mesothelioma UK Research Centre where we conduct mixed-methods research to improve the experiences of people living with mesothelioma. The project you will work on is exploring the sensitive and important topic of future planning for the end-of-life; and end-of-life experiences in different settings (such as, home, hospital or hospice). The project aims to improve support for people living with mesothelioma in choosing where to spend their final days. The student will gain practical experience of qualitative data collection, including planning and organising a focus group to capture important data. The student will also undertake a literature review on healthcare professional experiences of supporting patients with cancer (and their families) in future planning for the end-of-life. You will talk to mesothelioma clinical nurse specialists and other professionals from our steering group to gain insights for questions to ask the focus group participants. No experience is needed and we offer flexible working (online and at the University of Sheffield). Students will need to find their own accommodation and be expected to present their findings orally at a research day in York on 08th September 2026.
