Summer PLACEMENTS Application Process

Students thinking about a career in science have many routes available to them, involving further education (Masters and PhD), technical roles, the pharmaceutical industry, animal technology, lab and contract management, and grant funding to name just a few. Access to these careers starts with your degree, but can be greatly advanced by gaining first-hand experience of working in a laboratory or technical setting. This can be invaluable to add to your CV, give you a good focus in any interview, and is desirable for many potential employers.

How to apply

The application form asks for the following information

PART A:
Student details and choose your top two projects

PART B:
Three short questions on enthusiasm for your subject and the reasons for doing a studentship

PART C:
Widening participation data will be used as part of the application process, but will not be shared with the interview panel members.

Right to work documentation

Any applicant who is offered a studentship will be asked to provide evidence of their right to work in the UK before beginning the studentship.
‍
This will involve providing a copy of your passport to the University’s HR Team. If you are a non-EU national your passport should contain details of your student visa confirming that you have obtained permission to work. You will be contacted with further instructions on how to complete a Right to Work check either virtually or in-person if you are offered the role.
‍
You must be eligible to work in the UK and have a valid National Insurance (NI) number to complete this internship. If you are in the application process for an NI number at the time your internship is due to start, you can start work, however please note the University of York Casual Worker Team will require you to provide your NI number as soon as possible.

How we allocate

Shortlisting will take place as soon as possible after the closing date and successful applicants are normally notified promptly.

Candidate interviews:

Candidates will be selected for an interview using widening participation criteria and based on answers to PART B
‍
Successful candidates:
‍
- Will be assigned to an appropriate project with a supervisor
- Will spend 6-12 weeks working on a paid full time contract
- Start date: end of June
‍
Interviews for US studentships will take place in early March and for UK studentships in early April.
‍
You'll be notified as soon as possible after the interview dates whether your application has been successful, placed on a reserve list or unsuccessful.

For successful York students, we will encourage you to apply for the York Futures Scholarship Fund to assist with living expenses during the studentship.
