Before becoming a supervisor, Elena started her own GenRes journey with a summer placement in 2022 with Dawn Coverley in Biology at York.
It was a really fun experience! I really enjoyed teaching one-to-one a student who genuinely appreciates the biology behind my ongoing research and who wants to be a part of it. They also gave me perspective on methods of teaching that work/don't work for them, causing me to adapt and think of new ways to convey knowledge and experience. It was also possible to collectively learn new techniques and machines together with the generously granted funds from the project. I became good friends with my student in a very short time and I wouldn't want to lose contact with them in the future.
I've really learnt how to manage my time and ensure that there was always something pre-planned to ensure that the student gets the best experience possible and to keep the research flowing.
I am very grateful to have been offered and trusted with this generous grant to fund my research and provide me with a teaching experience, which to me, is a first. Without this grant, myself and my student wouldn't have been able to learn new techniques such as confocal microscopy on the Elyra 7 and take high resolution whole tissue section images on the SlideScanner. It has allowed me to advance as a young researcher by gaining new experiences and skills and it has allowed me to share these experiences with an upcoming new researcher. Thank you!
